Citizens For Clean Groundwater

Tylerville and Higganum Aquifers
1.0 ) Tylerville -Located at the base of exit 7 along route 9, the Tylerville section of Haddam, Connecticut includes an aquifer that extends along Bridge Road all the way to the Connecticut River.  This aquifer has had long term groundwater concerns since the mid 1970s and the entire area is considered a state superfund site by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.   See the Haddam Bulletin articles for more details.
Known releases of solvents have resulted in the area being designated as a high prority area with over a dozen houses with known contamination above action levels that has resulted in the water supplies in the area not being potable.
The Citizens for Clean Groundwater began compiling area data and has worked closely with the Chatham Health Department to conduct the first aquifer- based sampling effort completed to date.
2.0) Higganum-Located at the intersection of Saybrook Road and Killingworth Road in Haddam, Connecticut this aquifer extends throughout many neighborhoods and has had know groundwater pollution since the late 1970s.  There are three state superfund locations in higganum center including Neils Cleaners, Higganum DOT, and Higganum Center and the town has agreed to collect water samples in portions of the downtown higganum.  We are still compiling the sources and and extent of the pollution and you can join now and be a part of the research project.

THE CITIZENS FOR CLEAN GROUNDWATER HAS BEEN COMPILING DATA FOR TYLERVILLE CONNECTICUT FOR OVER A YEAR AND WE CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH DETAILS OF OVER 100 WATER WELL SAMPLES UPON REQUEST.

THE HADDAM BULLETIN ALSO HAS WRITTEN ARTICLES SUMMARIZING THE PROBLEMS IN A CONCISE MANNER.

WE ARE NOW COMPILING DATA TABLES AND PLUME MAPS FOR HIGGANUM CONNECTICUT AND ADDITIONAL TESTING IS ONGOING OF WATER SUPPLY WELLS IN BOTH AREAS BY THE CHATHAM HEALTH DISTRICT.

PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU LIVE IN THESE AREAS TO ARRANGE FOR FREE WATER TESTING OF YOUR WELL WATER TO ENSURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND IF YOUR WELL HAS BEEN CONTAMINATED, IF YOUR NEED A CARBON FILTER OR IF YOUR CARBON FILTER IS WORKING PROPERLY.

WHAT IS SAFE IN DRINKING WATER???
The drinking water standard applies for all contaminants in the Tylerville because it is a GA groundwater* designation area.  The following action levels are present for the listed contaminants.  Any reporting above the action level requires immediate treatment according to CTDEP regulations.
CHEMICAL NAME                           GA ACTION LEVEL*
TRICHLOROETHENE                                                                5 PPB
METHYL T- BUTYL ETHER (MTBE)                                      70 PPB

New Citizens for Clean Groundwater Data!
The Botelles- 79/81 Bridge Road - Are residential homeowners that have collected on site samples from their water well, septic tank and shallow on site monitoring wells.  The results indicate that Tricholorethene was not detected in any shallow samples or in their septic system yet their well contains high levels of TCE.  TCE is a common industrial solvent that has been present in their 234 foot deep water supply well at concentrations that range between 300-400 PPB for over 25 years.   The drinking water standard for TCE is 5.   Data collected recently has resulted in this location being considered a non lust site and not a source of TCE contamination with the source being upgradient of this residential home. (reference CTDEP LUST database 6/1/2009)
In the meantime their water supply well still shows a consistently high level of TCE in the raw water ranging from 250-290 PPB when the standard for safe water is 5.
