Tylerville and
Higganum Aquifers
1.0 ) Tylerville -Located
at the base of exit 7 along route 9, the Tylerville section of Haddam, Connecticut includes an aquifer that extends along
Bridge Road all the way to the Connecticut River. This aquifer has had long term groundwater concerns since the mid
1970s and the entire area is considered a state superfund site by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
See the Haddam Bulletin articles for more details.
Known releases of solvents
have resulted in the area being designated as a high prority area with over a dozen houses with known contamination
above action levels that has resulted in the water supplies in the area not being potable.
The Citizens for Clean Groundwater began compiling area data and has worked
closely with the Chatham Health Department to conduct the first aquifer- based sampling effort completed to date.
2.0) Higganum-Located at the intersection of Saybrook Road and Killingworth Road in Haddam, Connecticut this aquifer extends throughout
many neighborhoods and has had know groundwater pollution since the late 1970s. There are three state superfund locations
in higganum center including Neils Cleaners, Higganum DOT, and Higganum Center and the town has agreed to collect water samples
in portions of the downtown higganum. We are still compiling the sources and and extent of the pollution and you
can join now and be a part of the research project.
