HADDAM CONNECTICUT
CASE STUDY
THE CITIZENS FOR CLEAN GROUNDWATER REPORTED HIGH LEVELS OF TRICHLOROETHANE (TCE)
TO CTDEP OVER 3 YEARS AGO IN TYLERVILLE CONNECTICUT. A HIGH PRIORITY EPA HAZARDOUS WASTE SITE (THE SIBLEY COMPANY) WAS
SUSPECTED TO BE THE SOURCE. The site is under RCRA consent orders and has not yet been studied or remediated.
Contact DEP or the town to find out more about this site. Maps showing area contamination are available on the Tylerville
Aquifer page for more details.
While some homeowners have had their water supply
wells fitted with carbon filters, most have not recieved the quarterly testing required by law. Without frequent tests, filters
can be subject to contaminant "breakthrough".
Because no action
has taken place over the past 30 years to clean up the aquifer, the TCE contamination has spread and is now affecting more
wells.
THE TOWN HAS RECENTLY APPROVED THE SIBLEY FACTORY FOR USE AS A GROCERY
STORE WITH USE OF ON SITE WELL WATER. THIS SITE IS A HIGH PRIORITY EPA RCRA CORRECTIVE ACTION LOCATION.
It is important for residents to be aware of the public health issue related to groundwater issues
in Tylerville and as we obtain more data we will post it here on the web site.
