Citizens For Clean Groundwater

Welcome
The Citizens for Clean Groundwater - Is a free, Connecticut-based, Non-profit organization
Our mission is to educate citizens about local contamination sources that affect aquifers and groundwater quality.
We evaluate the entire groundwater area in a holistic manner, to focus government and citizen attention on current pollution that is migrating into the groundwater and impacting humans and other species.

Since standard water potability tests do not include common industrial contaminants, we also assist citizens in getting the proper tests done to ensure YOU are not drinking water that is not healthy or above EPA levels that are known to cause health problems.

We work with local, state and federal environmental enforcement agencies to focus attention on groundwater threats, assist You to obtain free or discounted water tests and highlight YOUR concerns in areas where groundwater is suspect or known to contain contamination.

We hope you contact us to find out more about  pollution in your neighborhood.

We can provide YOU with Data about superfund sites, leaking tanks, landfills and other sources of groundwater contamination in your neighborhood.

How We Can Help YOU!
  • Once you join- you can nominate an area for our scientists, lawyers and engineers to compile and map known problems.

  • We work with all levels of government to share data, assist in prioritizing high risk sites and obtaining file  data to pinpoint the sources of contamination.

  • We use public information reviewed by technical volunteers to ensure the public health and the environment are considered.

  • We focus on remediation and clean-up of these areas so that groundwater can improve and be used in the future safely for drinking water.

  • We publish Press releases and groundwater plume maps that are easy to understand and distribute them in the community.
  • We assists local residents to understand complex environmental data and request cooperation from local, county and state organizations to ensure enforcement of environmental and public health regulations.

What Can We Do?
  • Compile data on known contamination issues to determine the nature and extent of local groundwater threats.
  • Coordinate water well sampling at affected locations.
  • Educate residents and officials in a cooperative and consumable way with recommended practical solutions.
  • Document findings in a report that is made publicly available.
  • Participate in ongoing actions until the problem is resolved and groundwater quality improves.

CARBON FILTERS ARE NOT ALWAYS SAFE

CARBON FILTERS ARE A SHORT TERM SOLUTION TO WATER SUPPLY TREATMENT

IF THEY ARE NOT SAMPLED AND MAINTAINED ON A QUARTERLY BASIS THEY CAN GIVE A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.

THEY ALSO REMOVE LIMITED CONTAMINANTS AND DO NOT WORK IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS.

Groundwater is our Water Supply!

But it also recieves wastes from industry, septic systems and soils contaminated from years of releases.

Depending on where you live, there may be contamination in your groundwater that needs your attention.

You can make a difference by learning more about sources of pollution and acting on them.

How Can you Help?

Learn more about your groundwater and the water supply in your neighborhood.  Is it safe? are there known pollutants? Join on Page 2 or call us to learn more about your aquifer.

Map your house and see what is near it! There are 25,000 hazardous wastes site in Connecticut.  Many have not been studied or cleaned up yet.  Click on the link below to see if one of these is near your location.  Map

Come back and see the additional sites added to our mapping system each week!, Most of these are significant sources of Groundwater Pollution.

  HADDAM CONNECTICUT CASE STUDY

THE CITIZENS FOR CLEAN GROUNDWATER REPORTED HIGH LEVELS OF TRICHLOROETHANE (TCE)  TO CTDEP OVER 3 YEARS AGO IN TYLERVILLE CONNECTICUT.  A HIGH PRIORITY EPA HAZARDOUS WASTE SITE (THE SIBLEY COMPANY) WAS SUSPECTED TO BE THE SOURCE.  The site is under RCRA consent orders and has not yet been studied or remediated.  Contact DEP or the town to find out more about this site.  Maps showing area contamination are available on the Tylerville Aquifer page for more details.

While some homeowners have had their water supply wells fitted with carbon filters, most have not recieved the quarterly testing required by law. Without frequent tests, filters can be subject to contaminant "breakthrough".

Because no action has taken place over the past 30 years to clean up the aquifer, the TCE contamination has spread and is now affecting more wells.

THE TOWN HAS RECENTLY APPROVED THE SIBLEY FACTORY FOR USE AS A GROCERY STORE WITH USE OF ON SITE WELL WATER.  THIS SITE IS A HIGH PRIORITY EPA RCRA CORRECTIVE ACTION LOCATION.

It is important for residents to be aware of the public health issue related to groundwater issues in Tylerville and as we obtain more data we will post it here on the web site.

please refer to our summary data tables on the tylerville page to see the actual water testing results for tylerville in the last few quarters.
